Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. We’ve all heard that mantra but how many of us really think about it in terms of our day-to-day actions? Do we bring our own water bottle or buy a disposable one every time we are thirsty? If we do buy a water bottle, are we using it more than once before we throw it out? Have you ever bought something only to realize you already had something that could work which would otherwise be thrown away?
If you want to create a backyard or window-sill garden, sure you could go out and buy new plastic planter boxes, but maybe you have the perfect container in your kitchen, or garage, or recycling bin right now. Maybe you just need that milk carton, a pair of scissors, some rocks for drainage, some potting soil, and some seeds to start growing an herb, vegetables, or flowers.
When tackling a DIY project or hobby, do you go to the store or online and buy everything in the aisle or “frequently bought together” whether you need it or not? Or do you borrow tools from friends or family or from a tool library? Have you checked out free sites like Craigslist or Front Porch Forum to see if someone is getting rid of the exact thing you need? Small actions like these can reduce the waste we create and send to the landfill and reduce its effect on our environment.
Every journey starts with small steps, make those small steps add up to something big. We hope to be able to divert waste and repurpose materials for future projects. If you have supplies that may be useful, please Contact Us.
